Fleetwood Corporation has been awarded the construction contract for a 293-unit service workers' village in South Hedland.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls announced today that Fleetwood would construct the cap at Osprey, with the project funded by $20.5 million in Royalties for Regions funds.

"We recognise the immediate need to house service workers in the region and have made significant progress to fast track land and housing developments in Port and South Hedland," he said.

Housing Minister Terry Redman said Fleetwood was selected as the project's preferred proponent after winning a request for proposal process.

"After a careful evaluation process, Fleetwood was awarded the contract to deliver 293 one, two and three-bedroom accommodation units at the Osprey site," Mr Redman said.

"Rent prices will be set at about 40 per cent below market value, to provide service workers with access to affordable living options.

"The service workers' village will offer residents a high standard of lifestyle and amenity with facilities such as a swimming pool and community centre."

Construction of the village is expected to commence in September.
